Chamber of Commerce warns more redundancies on the cards
Summer 2009 and everyone is hoping for more positive signs of economic recovery. Whilst there are glimmers of hope, the reality is that employment levels and real business confidence will not return for at least 12 months although some predict more like 18 months.
In an article in HR Magazine the Chamber's poll of 450 businesses show that 51% are likely to make cuts in the next few months.
So what can a business owner or manager do to prepare for the inevitable? The first step is to plan a redundancy strategy – what skills are needed in the business and which can be transferred to other members of staff? What are the timescales? Are all decision makers aware of the legal process when making redundancies? Do they need training? Is the business eligible for government grants and funding to help employees who are likely to be made redundant?
Taking time out to plan a redundancy strategy not only minimises the risk of unfair dismissal claims. It reduces the pressure on managers and the business recovers more quickly.
