Beware of the Halo Effect

Managers need to be trained in critical thinking and conducting competency based interviews to avoid making judgements based on the “halo effect”.  Managers in all fields and functions tend to lack critical judgement and as a result are gullible and vulnerable to the quick fix solution.

Managers ought to develop their interview skills and capacity for rigorous thinking to avoid making specific decisions based on a general impression, a phenomenon known as the halo effect.

Within the recruitment process it is vital that a competency framework is selected.  This is the crucial element to avoid the halo effect as line managers will ask structured competency based questions at interview.

References and not halos are the only aspect of the recruitment process which should glow!!
