Generation Y – divas or doers?

Many critical comments are made about Generation Y (those born in or after 1980).  They are accused of being fickle divas who expect everything to fall into their lap. However, supporters of this generation argue that members are independent, creative and highly innovative and are willing to engage in companies that are prepared to offer the type of environments in which they strive – this does not necessarily mean changing the office dress code to include flip flops and gap year jewellery.

Some argue that Generation Ys are looking for organisations that offer more than money.  They are looking for an environment which is flexible and in which they can continue to learn.  In order to recruit and more importantly retain generation Y it has been suggested that companies need to offer incentives such as international postings at an early stage in the career path, sabbaticals after 3 years, set clear and achievable targets and reward generation Y generously for achieving the targets.  Not much really!

With the global hunt for talent, employers are needing to become more innovative and in tune with what motivates Generation Y.  Whilst salary is important so is the employer brand, company culture and the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility record.  So perhaps Generation Ys are not the happy go lucky idealists some would have them portrayed as.

Divas or doers they are much in demand!  Talent acquisition and retention experts Recrion have the answers.  Visit http://www.recrion.co.uk
